In the barest sense, it's accounting. It comes from the Latin - to place a stone. Calculus was once a pebble. How strange it must have been to be the first man to place a stone on a grid and state "This stands for something it is not." This is the basis of poetic thought.

Calculi is a drawing project that takes this most basic of gestures as its organizing principle--a way of paying attention to the interplay of generic object and organizing lattice, the tension between thing and stand-in, the difference between one edge of a mark and the other.
